A Message From In-Coming First Officer
Al “SteelDawg” Sunday

First and foremost I must say it’s been quite a ride this past year and it sure went fast. As a 7 year member of this chapter I thought I knew what I was in for by accepting the Second Officer position. Boy, was I wrong. I never realized the enjoyment I would get out of being Second Officer in this chapter. It starts with working with Whizzer. He has been a phenomenal mentor and more importantly a life-long brother. I wish everyone could know Whizzer like I do. He is the best and cares for this chapter more than anyone will ever know. For that, I thank him for leading me down the right path and preparing me to run this chapter as the new First Officer. I will do nothing to disrespect this chapter and will work hard to carry the tradition forward.

I would be remiss not to mention the importance of all the members of this chapter, but especially the current and retired officers. We have the best of the best as far as Officers go. It started with SpEd and El Sid and continues today with one of the best chapters in SCRC history. That’s why wherever we go people know about little ol’ Conroe, TX, and they know “Conroe Rocks!!!”

As far as the future of this chapter, I am very excited to take on the First Officer position and look forward to great things. We won’t be changing many things, but may just tweak a few. One of my underlying themes is to get ALL members involved. That means retired members as well as brand new members and everyone in between. This is your club and your Officers give much of their time to make it a great club. They work very hard and we need to take some of the burden off them. That’s where you come in. GET INVOLVED. I am available to everyone in this club to hear your thoughts. You can call me at 713-320-7640 or e-mail me at alsunday@gmail.com.

I want to thank everyone ahead of time for their commitment and dedication to keep the club strong. It would not be a club without you!!! I look forward to a great 2009. See you on the road and RIDE SAFE!!!

Jim Allen “Whizzer”
First Officer 2006-2008

A Message From Out-Going First Officer

Jim “Whizzer” Allen

To my Conroe SCRC Family: I don’t know how to put my thoughts and gratitude into words but I’ll try my best. I’m more of an action person rather than a speaking or writing person, so I’ll do my best to express how I feel about the Conroe Chapter of SCRC.

I have been a member for 8 years now and when I first joined I just wanted to ride, and ride I did. Conroe has always made rides available and I road every chance I could. Through this time I earned my road name “Whizzer” and it has stuck and I’m very proud of it. I had no idea that wanting to ride would bring the FO & SO to consider me as a Road Captain, but it did. Over those years as RC I was asked to become the Second Officer. As you all know, that lead up to me becoming First Officer.
I want to thank each and everyone of you for allowing me to hold this position. You accepting me as First Officer really made me smile and enjoy this position even more. I have had a blast riding with you all for the past two years as FO. I have never felt prouder than when other chapters asked where I was from and when they seemed to always recognize us by the way we ride. When I said I’m from the Conroe Chapter I always said it proudly, as I’m very fortunate to be a part of this Family & Chapter.
As being FO for 2 years it is time for me to step down and retire. I have worked very close with SteelDawg this past year. I had no idea that working with SteelDawg would bring so much enlightenment to my life. Not only has SteelDawg been my right hand for the last year, he has become a mentor in my life that I truly respect and admire, and which has turned into a great friendship that I will cherish  forever.  As I turn this chapter over to SteelDawg,  I know he will be inspiring all of us with new ideas that will add to the excitement of this chapter. I support SteelDawg as our new First Officer and I hope each of you will do the same. SteelDawg is a real man and as you get to know him you will learn that he is full of compassion and love.
Though I’m retiring, I’m not going to the old folks home or selling my bike. I will still be joining you all on Chapter Rides, Bike Nights, and other rides and special events. I want you all to know, I love this family of mine and I’m glad I had the opportunity to lead you all.
Thank you again for supporting all my efforts.
-Whizzer

Group Riding
The purpose of riding in an organized group instead of an undisciplined pack is to provide the additional safety that a well-organized group inherently generates.

This comes from within the group and from the outside. When a group rides in an orderly fashion, people don’t get in each others way, and the organization of the formation itself discourages cars from attempting to cut in. I have even seen trucks move to the far side of their lane to minimize wind blast when they see a well-ordered formation “single up” and move as far away from the truck as their lane allows.

Once riding rules have been adopted by a club, EVERYONE Riding with the SCRC is expected to follow them. Anyone violating the rules, and compromising everyone else’s safety, will be warned, and if their actions continue, will no longer be welcome to ride with the club.

New Members Ride
What is the “New Riders/New to Group Riding” Ride?

It’s a chance for the newer or returning rider to take a nice ride with several of our road captains on route that we know well. It’s a shorter than usual route, but it’s a nice ride!

It’s a leisurely ride with plenty of time at lunch and after the ride to ask questions and a great way to start riding with a group. This ride is just for you - there’s no pressure to keep up with a large group, no real schedule or time table of stops, and less daunting than taking off with a group of 50 or more bikes (even though we break into groups of 10 or so for chapter rides).

We strongly encourage new and returning riders to join us for a couple of these before making a chapter ride.

Before the ride, please read our road rules and understand the staggered formation, 1 and 2 second rule, and hand signals.

New Riders rides are scheduled monthly, please visit our forum for details on dates/times. In case of questionable weather, please check the forum or your e-mail before heading out in the morning.

We meet at I-45/League Line Road at the McDonalds/Chevron.

Please get there a little early if you want to eat. We’ll spend 30 minutes going over the riding rules and having some Q & A before we take off. The route is around 100 miles, with lunch at the conclusion back in Conroe. At lunch we can continue to discuss group riding and address any questions, comments, or concerns you may have.

To sign up, you may either register on the under this month’s New Members Ride posting or e-mail the New Members Ride Coordinator, Steve “Preacher” Humphrey, at stvhump@hotmail.com

Please read the information below, and at the very least, understand the recommended spacing, and hand signals.

PROPER SPACING
Just for the official record… here is the correct distance for a 1-second gap at 75MPH
75M/hr x 5280 ft/mi x 1hr/60 min x 1 min/60 seconds
This calculation yields the equivalent feet per second you are traveling at 75 MPH. This is exactly 110 feet!!!!!!!!!!!
If most cruisers are about 8 feet long - that’s close to 14 bike lengths…
Can you imagine how much more comfortable you would be with 110 feet? When riding staggered, the next rider would be 220 feet behind you!!!
The rule of thumb is - 1 second to the rider in front/behind of you on the other side of the lane, 2 seconds to the next rider in your part of the lane, forward or back”. The actual gap distance will change as your road speed changes:
30 mph - 44 feet = 1 second
40 mph - 59 feet = 1 second
50 mph - 73 feet = 1 second
60 mph - 88 feet = 1 second
70 mph - 103 feet = 1 second
75 mph - 110 feet = 1 second
This is really not that difficult. You would never follow anybody in a CAR at 8 feet at 75 MPH and have a prayer of not making a mistake, so why anyone would ride motorcycles that way? If you were staggered, the person behind you would be 16 feet off your bumper. That’s a recipe for disaster…
Think about it… Ride Safe!

You can order the cards from Sheila.
